Abstract

The environment constitutes a major aspect of tourism as it is directly related to the formation of its quality standards. It is getting widely accepted that sustainability should be the main goal of a modern tourism policy which takes into consideration all the parameters - including the economic one – as well as any medium and long term gains. Τhe tourism industry seems to realize its weaknesses and turns to methods and practices that will ensure its viability.

Simultaneously, in the recent years there has been a steadily increasing trend among tourists to buy and receive services related to tourism from companies known for their sensitivity to the protection of the natural environment. The hospitality sector is energy intensive as the required levels of comfort and luxury have negative effects on the environment. The aim of the hotel units is to increase competitiveness, and protection of the environment through the creation of "green hotels". In addition, “green policies” can enable the hotel units to save significant amounts of money.

This study[1] approaches the issue of environmental applications, attitudes and behaviors of 4 and 5 star hotels in Attica region.  It will try to clarify the degree of awareness and activation of the hotel businesses to environmental protection issues in the light of the worldwide emerging “green” tourism.
