In last decades there was rapid growth in the use of online social networking sites, such as Facebook. With social media becoming increasingly popular, the use of these media as a source of information deserves further investigation. In our research a quantitative design, where participants complete online survey about their use of Facebook, was implemented. Main aim of the research was the exploration of the motives and frequency of use a Facebook as a source of information.

The results show that users of younger age, unmarried, unemployed, students and private Employees use Facebook more hours that older and married users, and from people who live on their own.

Women and unemployed people are more interested in the "Time" the "Life Style" and "Health", while men for the "Sport" and "technology". University graduates are more interested in “economic matters”. Unmarried people use Facebook for the "Life Style" and "Technology" in relation to the married couples.

Students and professionals choose to a greater extent be informed via Facebook for the "Sport" in relation to the other professional categories.

People staying with their parents or themselves appear to watch more updates on Facebook as regards the "Technology" in relation to people staying with a spouse or with a companion.

Persons who do not reside in urban centers in relation to people staying in urban centers are interested in "News from all over Greece", "Local news", the "Weather" and "Economy". People who use the Internet more than 5 hours a day use to a greater extent the Facebook as a source of information for the "Sport" and "Technology" in relation with the people involved in the Internet less than 1 hour per day. Respectively the people involved in the Internet 3-5 hours a day use Facebook to learn of the "Life Style" to a greater extent with the people who spend less than 1 hour per day on the Internet.

Finally, people who use more than five hours daily the internet, consider Facebook to be the most important source of information in relation to the people involved in the Internet less than 1 hour per day.

The limitations of the study concern the collection of data in a specific time period instead of a longer length of time, the sample of 314 users should be broaden to include users from different countries and various demographic categories. Despite the limitations, our study provides a contribution to the efforts to explore new phenomena, whose long-term consequences cannot be foreseen today.
