Title: The concept of Organizational Projectification, Past, Present and Future: The Greek case

Abstract

Nowadays, terms such as "project" or "project management" are used extensively and mainly in the business sector and generally in organizations. The perpetually changing environment tends to make processes more sophisticated and problems more complex, so the use and management of projects is an only way for the sustainability of the organizations and generally for the organization of human activities. According to this, using and managing projects are upgraded and incorporated into people's everyday lives in a variety of ways, so here we meet "Projectification".

In 1995, "Projectification" was introduced for the first time in the history of Project Management by Christopher Midler, who wanted to accurately describe how the development of a new car model, changed the Renault car industry. One of the definitions often mentioned in the bibliography is that "Projectification" means the widespread use of projects in order to organize and troubleshoot organizations. However it is much more than that!

Although Projectification prevails in all areas of human activity, the extent of its influence on the global economy has not been studied yet in depth. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to review the evolution of the concept of organizational Projectification, from the past to the present and then the future, listing the interactions of the "phenomenon - Projectification" with the economy and society and to a certain extent to measure the degree of Projectification in Greece.

The main purpose of the research was to measure the degree of Projectification in selected sectors, also in selected organizations located in Greece, while aiming at clarifying the Greek organizations’ degree of Projectification, what kind of projects they use, what the size of the organizations that they use projects extensively is and generally to obtain a clearer picture, about Projectification in Greece and when this phenomenon was (or will be) on its peak.

The survey, conducted through questionnaires in a sample of 66 organizations based in Greece, included organizations belonging to the construction sector, the manufacturing sector, the services’ sector, the consulting services’ sector, the information and communication sector, the retail sector and the public sector.

Therefore, from the analysis of the data obtained, it was found that the consulting sector has the highest degree of Projectification, followed by the service sector, the public sector, the information and communication sector, the construction sector, the manufacturing sector and the sector retail, which has the lowest degree of Projectification. Finally, it was found that organizations carrying out most of their activities through projects are usually small, while organizations of independent size tend to use more and more projects, both internally and externally, with external ones being used a little more.
