Title: THE MOBBING PHENOMENON AMONG THE MEDICAL RESIDENTS OF UNIVERSITY GENERAL HOSPITAL OF PATRAS

Abstract

Aim: The mobbing phenomenon is present in the workplace of health professionals. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the phenomenon in the medical residents of the University General Hospital of Patras (UGHP).

Material and method: The study was conducted by distributing the Negative Acts Questionnaire (NAQ) in the Pathology, Surgery and Laboratory departments. Medical residents were asked to respond anonymously and voluntarily.

Results: Altogether 92 doctors participated. A total score of 56.32 for the total (NAQ Index) was observed in all medical residents, which means very high levels of mobbing-frequent and extreme aggressive behaviors. Statistically significant difference occurs with respect to age (p=0.0174), where 25-35 shows the highest value (58.5), whereas the smallest appears at age of 45-55. There is a statistically significant difference across a domain (p=0.017), with highest value in the field of Surgery (62.55) and in the Laboratory sector the lowest (45.35). There is no statistically significant difference among the samples based on the training, the sex, and the years of specialization.

Conclusions: Levels of mobbing among UGHP medical residents are marginally very high. This requires thorough control by the Hospital Administration and appropriate measures to prevent and address the phenomenon effectively.
