Title: Goodwill Rerecognition and Impairment in crisis time. The case of Greece
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The main objective of this study is to provide an overview of the accounting practices used by the Greek firms listed on the ATHEX related to goodwill recognized in business combination and to impairment testing of goodwill. Moreover, it evaluates the sufficiency of the related disclosures in the financial statements prepared in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) of a sample of 106 firms for the period from 2006 to 2015.
The aim of this study is to review how the effects of the economic crisis in impairment testing are taken into account by the Greek companies.
The results show that the outbreak of the economic crisis in 2010 and the following poor economic development in Greece, brought significant impairment losses and goodwill write-offs in the vast majority of the Greek companies.
The findings are useful for financial analysts and stock market authorities as they enable them to understand the impact of the economic crisis in the financial position and the performance of the Greek listed companies.
