Title: Annoyance from air pollution in the city of Athens

Abstract

One of the major problems of the big cities, worldwide, is air pollution, being responsible for the cause of health problems in humans and other organisms, as well as for the degradation of environmental quality. A major factor for the increased air pollution is the combustion products from fuel consumption for heat, during the winter months. This paper attempts a comparative analysis of the survey results on the annoyance of residents of Athens from air pollution. The survey was repeated in two distinct periods, referring to years 2013 and 2015, through the use of the same questionnaire, which was applied to a representative sample of the residents of Attica. The statistical analysis and comparative evaluation of the results has allowed the identification of potential differences in terms of heating mode selection, the degree of annoyance of air pollution and their relationship to socioeconomic factors (oil price, economic crisis, health status).
