Title: Models of exit from the crisis in the peripheral Greece. Case study on the Prefecture of Kavala

Abstract

The periphery of Greece appeared very different patterns of exit from the crisis, after 2017, due to the economic peculiarities of each region. These peculiarities are referred to the geographical identity, the history and the economic activities which are flourished in each region. Our research examines thoroughly the fundamentals of private economy and national accounts of the prefecture of Kavala in North East Greece. Concretely, we focus on the correlation between different sectors (primary and tertiary sector) and cities. For example, how the visitors of an internationally recognized tourist destination (the island of Thasos) supports the economic survival and growth of a city (Kavala) which looks like much kore to an administrative center and less to a typical summer tourist destination. Our method uses official data from Hellenic Statistical Authority of last five years as well as information and contributions from focus groups among businessmen, officials from the local Chamber of Commerce and trade unionists.

The conclusions of our research have a wider economic importance because highlight and prove the multiplying effects of coordination and complementarity of economic activities. In addition, these conclusions can be used as a method to increase the added value in the context of geographical unit.
