Title: Basel Decisions, the International Accounting Standards and the European financing of the banks in Greece
Abstract
This study presents the financial conditions that significantly affect the accounting figures of Banks, with emphasis on their equity figures. In particular, the financial statements published by the four systemic Banks in Greece in two different- crucial for their sustainability- time periods are examined.
The first period concerns the bond exchange program (PSI) in 2012 and 2013 related to the balance sheets for the years 2011 - 2015, and
The second period concerns the effort to reduce the NPL index for 2021 and 2022 related to the balance sheets of the years 2016 - 2021.
In the previous two periods, the Banks decisions were harmonized both with the financial decisions of the΄΄Basel Committee΄΄ and the European Central Bank, to cover the amount of their capital adequacy, as well as with the current tax and accounting legislation to cover the losses from the bonds ‘haircut’and the impairment of ‘non performing loans’, respectively.
