Title: Literature review on traffic data forecasting techniques
Abstract
It is beyond the shadow of a doubt that traffic-related information is capable of increasing the reliability in road networks and mitigating congestion as well as its detrimental environmental and societal repercussions. This article examines the problem of traffic forecasting, concentrating on its following components: To begin with, traffic data sources are investigated, taking into consideration the procedure enabling their collection. This is followed by analyzing and subdividing the algorithms used in the processing of the aforementioned data, into categories, with a view to determining traffic characteristics and ultimately, conducting the forecasting. A literature review of scientific articles, which study the model requirements and specifications, as well as the forecasting methods in use, is then carried out. Finally, conclusions are drawn as far as the work done on the subject.
