Bibliometric analysis of greenwashing
by Theodoros Nikolopoulos

The present study examines the international scientific literature on greenwashing, defined as the misleading presentation of a company as environmentally responsible without supporting evidence from its actual practices. The research is based on a bibliometric analysis and a systematic literature review of publications indexed in the
Scopus database. The main objective is to identify the evolution of the research field, the most influential authors, leading academic journals, dominant research themes, and future research directions. The findings reveal a remarkable increase in scientific publications after 2022, reflecting the growing importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria and sustainable development in business and financial markets. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that early research primarily focused on defining greenwashing and examining its effects on consumer trust. More recent studies have expanded their scope to include corporate governance, sustainable finance, environmental performance, and advanced technological approaches for detecting misleading environmental claims. The results also indicate that China has become the most productive country in this research area, while several high-impact academic journals have played a central role in disseminating knowledge on the topic. In addition, emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and big data analytics, are increasingly being employed to identify and evaluate greenwashing practices. Overall, the study concludes that greenwashing has evolved into a rapidly expanding research field of significant importance for businesses, investors, consumers, and policymakers, as it contributes to greater transparency, corporate accountability, and the promotion of genuine sustainable development.
