This paper focuses on investigating occupational segregation and the main challenges faced by women in the tourism sector, one of the most dynamic and significant branches of the economy. The primary objective of the study is to systematically examine the factors that contribute to gender inequality within tourism employment and to formulate evidence-based policy recommendations aimed at promoting gender equality and improving working conditions.
The analysis focuses on both vertical and horizontal occupational segregation, employment seasonality and job insecurity, difficulties in balancing professional and family responsibilities, as well as incidents of sexual harassment and gender-based discrimination. The methodological approach includes a comparative review of Greek and international literature, the analysis of secondary statistical data, and the examination of institutional and regulatory frameworks governing employment and gender equality.
The findings confirm the existence of significant barriers and inequalities that hinder women's meaningful participation in tourism development, while highlighting the need for comprehensive policy interventions. In this context, the study proposes measures aimed at enhancing women's access to training opportunities and leadership positions, improving working conditions, strengthening mechanisms for the prevention and management of discrimination and sexual harassment, and implementing policies that facilitate work–life balance.
This paper seeks to contribute to the scientific understanding of gender inequality in the tourism sector and to provide useful recommendations for the development of effective strategies that promote gender equality and support the sustainable development of the industry.
