Abstract
This study investigates the characteristics of mountain running in Greece and its contribution to tourism development in local communities. Conducted in 2026, the research surveyed Greek athletes who actively participate in mountain running events. The study examined participants' demographic and behavioral characteristics, their preferences and motivations, the challenges encountered by both runners and event organizers, and the contribution of mountain running to regional tourism development. Particular attention was given to the economic, social, and environmental impacts of mountain running events on host communities.
The findings indicate that mountain runners in Greece are highly engaged in the sport. Participants represented all age groups, with 71.5% reporting participation in more than seven mountain races, on average, during the previous two years. Respondents identified a range of challenges, including financial constraints, injuries, transportation difficulties, and limited accommodation availability near race venues. Although the vast majority of participants were amateur athletes, many demonstrated a high level of competitive performance, highlighting the limited opportunities and challenges associated with professional participation in mountain running. The decision to participate in a mountain race was influenced not only by the geographical location of the event but also by the quality of its organization and the overall race conditions.
The perceived contribution of mountain running events to local communities was overwhelmingly positive. Specifically, 79.1% of respondents considered their economic impact on host destinations to be significant or very significant. With regard to environmental sustainability, 34.5% believed that mountain races have a positive impact on the natural environment, while only 2.7% perceived a negative environmental effect. Furthermore, 28.2% stated that such events have no adverse environmental consequences. Social acceptance was also found to be high, with 78.2% of respondents reporting that local communities hold positive attitudes toward the organization of mountain races, whereas only 10% believed that local communities view these events negatively.
Overall, the findings suggest that mountain running can make a substantial contribution to the tourism development of mountainous regions in Greece. When supported by effective planning, high-quality event management, strategic promotion, and strong collaboration between public authorities and private stakeholders, mountain running events can generate substantial economic and social benefits while contributing to the sustainable development of host communities.
